From Pucon you can take the bus that will take you to the entrance of the national Park. From there you can start a couple of hikes. The lake route is the most common one. Along the way up to the first lake there are 2 good viewpoints from which you can see volcano Villarrica. The ascent from the parking lot to the first lake is 500 meters, so be prepared to do some hiking.
Be aware that in September there was still a lot of snow on the trail and part of it was very muddy. The entire hike leads you to 5 beautiful lakes, but because of the trail conditions we could only get to the 3 biggest lakes. Always consult the information center or the people at the entrance on which trails you are able to hike.
Make sure you at least take the small detour to the waterfall Trufulco, as this is a beautiful waterfall. The Nico de Aguila waterfall we found less impressive.
How to get to Huerquehue National Park
The entrance of the national park can be reached by taking a local minibus that starts across the street from the JAC bus terminal on calle Uruguay. Buses leave on time and take about 50-55 minutes to get to the national park which is the last stop of the bus. Make sure to ask the bus driver for schedule and the last ride back. When we were there the last bus left at 17.00 pm. Sometimes fuel is scarce and the bus schedule gets changed!
A busticket costs 2.200 peso per person and you pay on the bus. You can also buy a return ticket for 4.000 peso. Ask for a ida y vuelta ticket.
You can also go up by car, but keep in mind that the last part of the road is on a gravel road that is not really recommended for low clearance vehicles.
How much does Huerquehue National Park cost
The entrance fee is 7.000 peso for foreigners.
